Couch to 5K – Week 1

Last week was the first week of my effort in the Couch to 5K running program. It went better than I anticipated!! The first day was a little tough, but I pushed through to finish the run. At the end it felt good to have actually run for even a short amount of time.

The app on my phone works great and I love the ability to link it to the iPod feature of my iPhone!! I can listen to my tunes and the instructions on when to run, walk and cooldown are voiced over the music. The people that created that app are responsive on Twitter and are working on updating and improving the app based on user feedback.

I learned last week that there is a wealth of knowledge (and truthfully, I probably already knew this) on YouTube about stretching and warming up. A few of the videos I watched really helped with making Day #2 & Day #3 of Week #1 go well. They are now part of my regular warm-up to my run.

By the time I finished my workout on Saturday, I was pleased with my progress and the speed and distance I was covering. I am sticking to some pointers that a few friends on Twitter shared, like running at a 1.0 incline on the treadmill, to simulate outdoor conditions. I hope it helps!!

Finally, this week was encouraging because I shared with my friends on Twitter and Facebook, that I was undertaking this program, with the goal of running the 5K in the Toronto Marathon. The amount of encouragement was staggering!! It was great to know how much faith the people around me have in my abilities. To everyone that sent a message, “Thank You”. It meant a lot and stay tuned; I’ll have more updates each week!!
